In 2018, independent curator Manray Hsu continued his “Herbal City” exhibition concept and proposed to cooperate with Fengjia Art Museum and plan “Herbal City: Beitou, Pingxiang” under the public art plan of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Taipei City Government. “Pu people” series of lectures, readings, screenings and sulfur refining route walks, and a series of workshops planned by Mori people. This year was also the first time that Mori people entered Baodegong to hold activities. Because of the concern for the Ketagalan Beitou Society, in 2019, under the leadership of Fengjia Art Museum, curator Xu Wenrui proposed the exhibition “Looking for the home of Erythrina – Where is the Pingpu ethnic group?” and planned the Pingpu ethnic group, etc. Lectures on related topics, inviting storytellers from Beitou to plan the sulfur mining route of Yuyong River. The Tree Tree Tree Person series of workshops are located in historical locations, such as Beitou Sanxieqi Park, Guizikeng Water Conservation Park, Baode Palace, etc., and local craftsmen and artists lead the public to participate in handcraft activities. In addition, Tree Tree Tree Person also invited the art team o!land (Dorothy Wong Ka Chung & Benjamin Ryser) to stay in Taroko and Beitou to conduct workshops and creations. Artist Qin Zhengde and literary and historical worker Yang Ye led a visit to Qixing Mountain. The walking activity opens up the experience of walking in nature, culture and history in Beitou.
Because of the tacit understanding established with Baode Palace, in 2020, under the leadership of Fengjia Art Museum and the proposal of Morito, curator Manray Hsu planned the exhibition “The Wandering Earth God: The Sacred Place of Baode Palace”. With the theme of “Zhi Xue”, a public art exhibition will be held based on Baode Palace. Tree Tree Tree Person continues to organize workshops at Baode Palace. The workshops are held in the Qixing Mountains. They combine walking and workshops to provide people with a deeper sense of the body in the natural environment. In the same year, this program also cooperated with the Taipei University of the Arts International Master of Arts in Cultural and Creative Industries program. Zhang Yiwen, the host of the USR program at Taipei University of the Arts, led international students to participate in tile painting and clay workshops for international exchanges and gathering of past, The book “Wudi Beitou: An Ecological Literature and History Reading” was published by Fengjia Art Museum.
Under this opportunity, the “Tree Tree Tree Person-Beitou Art Residency Program” team came together, believing that through art, whether paying attention to the affairs of the mountains or the aboriginal people on the plains, it is inseparable from the observation of nature. After the Wuhan virus epidemic in 2021, the relationships and interaction patterns between people have gradually changed. Under the observation of the Tree Tree Tree Person Beitou team, the belief groups of Baode Palace have also changed. Based on the issues of land identity and integration of the original Han people, Paying attention to and supporting Baodegong, in 2022, “Come to tell stories at the stove foot beside the ditch – Tree Tree Tree Person. Beitou Chapter” will be held in Baodegong by opening up the unused and semi-open spaces of Baodegong. In the dark corner of the kitchen, artist You Mengshu was invited to design and lead public workshops. He also made good use of the kitchen space to hold workshops on the concept of food farming. Teacher Lu Li-chang was also invited to lead a walking tour of the ancient paths connecting Beitou Society with other societies. The history of the Toketagalan people opens up another page. Morito is concerned about “nature” and its extended contradictions through art, and uses the art of communicating with nature as a method. He is curious whether the performance framework of fictional curati 呢了on can reverse some kind of local identity and refine it. Another kind of natural knowledge lies within the limits of art.
The “Tree Tree Tree Person-Beitou Art Residency Program” aims to explore the historical memory, contemporary challenges and interaction between the Beitou community of the Ketagalan ethnic group and the environment through artistic intervention. We focus on the conflict and reconciliation between nature and human activities. Through on-site creations, community workshops and walking activities, we try to redefine “Beitou” in the multiple dimensions of geography, history and community. We hope to find possibilities in art, transforming the intertwining of history, land and current life into perceptual experiences, awakening people’s emotions for the land, and stimulating the cultural identity and self-understanding of the community, so that “Tree Tree Tree Person-Beitou Art” “The Residency Project” is not only an art project, but also a journey of dialogue with the land.
However, sincerely speaking, due to the influence of past colonial governments, authorities, and globalization, there are very few traces of the Ketagalan people’s lives in Beitou today, and relevant information is also very limited. In the past 1990s, the upsurge of the Pingpu ethnic movement fortunately aroused a lot of social concern and research. However, in the past two decades, most of the accumulated research data has stayed at that time. How can we regard this as a platform in the name of art in the future, and accumulate actions, creations, records, field materials, etc., large or small, to inject different reading perspectives into the public and provide society with a way to view this piece of history? More Yuan’s approach allows more people to understand and then know how to respect and preserve culture, which is also an ongoing issue.
